Ingredient Notes

recipe ingredients in small bowls and labeled
  • fresh salmon filet: Skin on or off, cut into bite-sized cubes or you can leave them as whole salmon fillets. I get my high quality, wild caught salmon from Wild Alaskan Company, and you can get $30 off your first box with code: jeanchoi
  • green onions and sesame seeds: For garnish.
  • avocado oil spray: Or another cooking spray.

Homemade Teriyaki Sauce

  • tamari sauce: Or regular or low sodium soy sauce if not gluten-free. You can also use coconut aminos if desired.
  • honey or maple syrup
  • garlic cloves
  • rice vinegar
  • sesame oil
  • ground ginger

Step-by-Step Instructions

numbered step by step photos showing how to make this recipe
  1. Combine all teriyaki sauce ingredients in a small bowl and set aside.
  2. Add salmon to a separate bowl and pour 1/2 of the sauce over the salmon. Toss to coat.
  3. Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees F. Spray the air fryer basket or tray with cooking spray or cover with parchment paper.
  4. Place salmon pieces in a single layer on the tray or basket. Cook for 5-7 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the top of the salmon is golden and flaky.
  5. Serve hot, drizzled with the remaining sauce, and sprinkled with sesame seeds and green onions – if using. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.

Expert Tips

  • You can use the same teriyaki marinade for other protein substitutions like air fryer teriyaki chicken, steak, shrimp, and more!
  • You can cut the salmon filets into cubed bites or leave them as filets – the cooking time doesn’t change. I personally like to cube them so the salmon has more surface area to soak up all the sauce for more flavor.

Serving Tips

Enjoy this salmon however you want. I prefer to make salmon bowls with white rice, cucumbers, carrots, and sliced avocado, with the teriyaki sauce drizzled over everything.

Feel free to serve them with a rice bowl, on their own with side dishes like vegetables, rice (brown rice or cauliflower rice will work!), or atop a salad. Use any extra teriyaki sauce to drizzle atop the cooked salmon.

Storage Tips

Salmon is best enjoyed right away as it can dry out when reheated. However, if you have leftover salmon, store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. If you have any leftover teriyaki sauce store it in a small container in the fridge and use it to make another batch or use it for another protein.

Reheat gently in the microwave or place back in the air fryer at 350 degrees F for a few minutes until heated through.

Recipe FAQs

Do you air fry salmon skin side up or down?

When air frying salmon, it is recommended to place the salmon skin side down. Cooking salmon this way allows the skin to crisp up nicely while the flesh cooks evenly.

It was a late night, we did not plan dinner out well, and this recipe came to mind after seeing it on IG the other day. Holy moly it was so effing fast and it’s SO EFFING DELICIOUS! The only thing I’m missing is green onion, and can’t wait to add it next time. And next time will be so soon because this is going on repeat.

This is delicious! I doubled the sauce and used it to season the bok choy I roasted as a side dish. The whole family enjoyed, even my picky 7 year old! This will definitely be one of my go-to dishes! Thank you!

A delicious and quick meal to prep. The flavors are right on point. I love to let the salmon cool and I cut up some mini cucumbers into crescent shaped pieces, cut up avocado, the green onions. Use the extra sauce to drizzle over everything, generous amount of black sesame seeds spread on top. Sometimes I’ll make this with rice as well and drizzle sriracha mayo, yum yum sauce all over it as well making a delicious poke bowl.
