Why You’ll Love This Cheeseburger Salad Recipe
I’ve always loved recreating my favorite fast food flavors at home, whether it’s recipes like these favorite smash burger big mac tacos, kid-friendly oven baked tacos with taco bell copycat beef, or this burger salad. I’ve made this salad so many times for lunch because it’s one of those meals that actually keeps me full for hours. Between the seasoned beef, cheddar cheese, and creamy animal sauce, this is one of those lunches that actually keeps me satisfied for hours.
The caramelized onions are what really make this recipe. They take a little extra time, but their sweetness balances the tangy pickles and pepperoncini so well. If you’re meal prepping, all of the components can be made ahead and stored separately, which makes throwing together a cheeseburger salad bowl during the week incredibly easy.
If you’re a fan of salads like my taco salad with Catalina dressing, this burger salad is another filling option that’s easy to keep on repeat.
Ingredients You’ll Need

Animal Sauce
- Mayonnaise: The creamy base for the animal sauce.
- Ketchup: Adds sweetness and that classic burger sauce flavor.
- Sweet relish: Gives the sauce its signature sweet and tangy taste.
- Yellow mustard: Adds brightness to both the sauce and the beef.
- Salt & pepper: Used throughout to season each layer.
Caramelized Onions
- Salt & pepper: To taste.
- Butter: Helps the onions cook slowly and evenly.
- Large onions: The key ingredient for achieving that animal-style flavor.
Beef
- Cheddar cheese: Melted directly over the beef for authentic cheeseburger flavor.
- Ground beef: The hearty protein base of this cheeseburger salad recipe.
- Sea salt: Brings out the flavor of the beef.
- Ground black pepper: Adds a subtle bite.
- Garlic powder: Gives the beef a classic burger seasoning flavor.
- Worcestershire sauce: Adds savory depth. Try this gluten-free Worcestershire sauce.
- Yellow mustard: Mixed into the beef for extra burger flavor.
Salad
- Sliced pepperoncini peppers: Add a tangy bite. Banana peppers work too.
- Shredded iceberg lettuce: Crisp, crunchy, and classic.
- Dill pickle slices: Essential for that burger shop flavor.
Recipe Variations
- If you want a little less heat, use banana peppers instead of pepperoncini peppers. They still add that tangy bite that works so well with the animal sauce.
- I sometimes add extra dill pickles because I love the crunch they add to every bite.
- Make it saucier by making some extra animal sauce and serving it on the side. It’s also so good for dipping lettuce wraps or drizzling over the beef.
- If you’re prepping this for the week, turn it into cheeseburger salad bowls by storing each component separately and assembling right before eating.
How to Make Cheeseburger Salad

Step 1: Make the animal sauce by stirring all of the ingredients in a bowl. Set aside so the flavors can meld while you prepare the rest of the salad.
Step 2: Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the butter starts bubbling, stir in the onions and season with salt and pepper.

Step 3: Continue to slowly cook and caramelize the onions for 15-20 minutes. If you notice the onions becoming dry or sticking to the skillet, stir in 1-2 tablespoons of water. You may need to do this 2-3 times. Once the onions are deeply golden and soft, remove from heat and set aside.
Step 4: Add ground beef to a large skillet over medium high heat and season with salt and pepper. Cook until browned about halfway, then stir in garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, and yellow mustard.

Step 5: Continue cooking until the beef is fully browned. Spread it into an even layer in the skillet, top evenly with cheese slices, then cover for 1-2 minutes until the cheese is melted. Remove from heat.
Step 6: Divide the shredded lettuce among serving bowls. Top with the cheesy beef, caramelized onions, dill pickles, and pepperoncini peppers. Drizzle generously with animal sauce and serve immediately.
