What Are Immunity Shots?

Immunity shots are a blend of fresh ingredients that boost immunity, aid in gut health and digestive health, and boost metabolism. They typically include fresh garlic, fresh ginger root, turmeric, fresh fruits/fruit juice, honey, and other spices. While it’s easy to find a store-bought version at your local grocery store, they are often expensive and contain extra, unneeded ingredients and preservatives.

So, making your own wellness shot recipe with plant-based ingredients is easy and provides the perfect daily boost and preventative measure to keep colds away. As always, be sure to check in with your healthcare provider to ensure adding an immune booster shot is right for you.

What Makes This Recipe Great

Immune-boosting health shots to help you during the cold and flu season! Each shot Includes all ingredients proven to help support the immune system, like garlic, ginger, turmeric, lemon, spices, and more. These wellness shots are easy to blend up– no juicer needed– easy on your digestion, and excellent aides in keeping colds at bay.

With 2 young kids, we deal with lots of colds and illnesses that my older daughter picks up from school, so I’ve been finding ways to boost everyone’s immune system to reduce getting sick. The best part is? This homemade Immunity Shot Recipe is good for them (with a couple of minor adjustments) AND me. I make a batch to store in the freezer, so I always have them on hand.

These immunity shots are a version of “fire cider,” and they’ve helped my sore throat go away recently without progressing to a full cold after consistently taking it in the mornings. While the taste is strong from the spicy ginger and garlic, it’s well balanced by the sweetness of honey and orange juice, which all have amazing health benefits.

Cheers to a healthy winter season with these immunity-boosting shots!

Ingredient Notes

This immunity shot recipe is filled with amazing, anti-inflammatory ingredients proven to boost immunity and have positive effects on overall wellness and health. You may want to get an extra ice cube tray to make a double batch– they’re that good!

recipe ingredients in small bowls and labeled
  • Garlic: Well known to be an incredible immune system booster with powerful antimicrobial and antiviral properties. To activate these beneficial properties, make sure to crush the cloves and rest for 10 minutes before using.
  • Lemon Juice and Orange Juice: Both citrus fruits are naturally excellent sources of vitamin C and antioxidants.
  • Fresh Ginger: There are so many health benefits of ginger. It’s a great source of vitamins B6 and C, along with minerals like zinc, iron, and magnesium. It is also high in antioxidants and great for nausea relief.
  • Turmeric: Known for its amazing anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Make sure to add ground black pepper, which helps the body enhance the absorption of curcumin, which are compounds in turmeric that have active medicinal properties.
  • Honey: Raw honey is known for its antifungal and antibacterial properties and also contains immune-boosting minerals. It is also great for soothing sore throat, and it helps with flavor in this recipe as well.
  • Coconut water: Contains high levels of lauric acid, which is known for its antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties.
  • Apple cider vinegar: Make sure to use raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with the “mother” to take advantage of the health benefits. That’s because there are healthy bacteria in this kind of apple cider vinegar, which can help fight off pathogens in our bodies.
  • Cinnamon: Also high in immune-boosting antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Cayenne Pepper: Contains capsaicin, which helps reduce nasal congestion.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Smash the garlic cloves with the side of a knife, then add to a blender. Let this sit for 10 minutes to oxidize.
  2. Squeeze the juice from the lemons and add to the blender.
  3. Peel the oranges and add the orange slices to the blender.
  4. Add the rest of the ingredients to the blender and blend until the mixture is smooth.
  5. Strain the liquid through a fine mesh strainer or sieve, and use the back of a spoon to press on the solids left behind on the strainer to squeeze out all the juices.
  6. Enjoy your shot immediately, or freeze in an ice-cube tray (I like these) until ready to consume.

Expert Tips

  • The serving size is one shot: about 3 tablespoons. It’s best taken fresh right after making for full health benefits.
  • For kids, you can give half a serving and dilute it with water and more honey to make it more palatable.

Serving Tips

Defrost a serving at room temperature, or poor warm water on the frozen cubes to defrost quickly. I don’t recommend using boiling water as high temperature may reduce the health benefits in the immunity shot. Take a few times a week for best results. If you feel a cold coming on, I recommend taking them every day for 4-5 days.

Storage Tips

To keep the nutrients at their full potential, you can freeze any leftovers of this immunity shot recipe in ice cube trays. I personally like to use these silicon cookie trays.

I defrost 2 circular blocks at a time, which is about 3 tbsp. For best results, I recommend defrosting your needed servings an hour before and taking first thing in the morning.
