What Makes This Recipe Great

Air fryers can do just about anything. I love utilizing my air fryer when I’m cooking because it can do so much without overcrowding the oven or the stovetop. Making side dishes in my air fryer is my stress-free secret to freeing up the oven and not feeling overwhelmed while cooking for the holidays.

Also, cooking a sweet potato in the air fryer is so much easier and faster than other methods. No preheating time, no foil, and no soaking. All you need are sweet potatoes, oil, and seasoning, and you have yourself the perfect air fryer baked sweet potato.

Soft, fluffy middles, with crispy edges, these baked sweet potatoes are so delicious! Top with your favorite toppings or create a “make your own potato bar” and enjoy!

Toppings: Butter or ghee, sea salt, ground black pepper, cinnamon, cumin, chili powder, garlic powder, sugar, thyme, and more.

Recipe Step by Step

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees F.
  2. Rinse and scrub the sweet potatoes. Pat dry and pierce with a fork all over.
  3. Rub coconut oil all over the sweet potatoes to coat. No need to spray the air fryer basket.
  4. Cook in the air fryer for 35-45 minutes depending on the size of your sweet potatoes, until a knife easily pierces through. Shake the basket to remove any excess oil.
  5. Remove the sweet potatoes and cool for 5 minutes.
  6. To serve, split the sweet potatoes in the middle and top with your favorite toppings.

Recipe FAQs

Should sweet potatoes be soaked before air frying?

No. There is no need to soak the potatoes before placing them in the air fryer.

Why are my air-fried sweet potatoes soggy?

Be sure not to overcrowd your air fryer. Overcrowding can cause the potatoes to get soggy, rather than soft with crispy edges.

Do you need to pierce potatoes before air frying?

When I tested this recipe, I did pierce the sweet potatoes before putting them in the air fryer.

How long do sweet potatoes take in the air fryer?

Cooking a sweet potato in the air fryer takes about 35 minutes.

Can I cut my sweet potatoes into cubes?

You can! However, the cooking time will change a bit. I recommend cooking them for 15 minutes, flipping them, then another 10 minutes. Check them to make sure they are soft and cook for a few minutes more if needed.
