When it comes to paleo Super Bowl snacks or game day recipes, one of my favorites is always dips with chips or veggies. I just love creamy dairy free dips and, when done right, they are so addicting that I’m just parked next to them for the whole night.

It’s not always easy to make Whole30 dips that resemble the ones with actual cream cheese or cheddar, but this keto bacon dip is definitely a winner and even your dairy-loving friends will rave about it.

Caramelized Onion and Bacon Dip Recipe

This ultra flavorful caramelized onion and bacon dip recipe is so addicting, slightly spicy, and just so wonderful. You can really taste the fantastic crunchiness from the bacon and green onions within the creaminess of the dip. It has quickly become one of my favorite paleo Super Bowl snacks to serve and it always disappears quickly.

How to Make Caramelized Onion and Bacon Dip

I love that you don’t even need to turn on the oven for this Whole30 and keto bacon dip. There are two main components to this recipe, onions and bacon, and they are both cooked in the skillet.

  1. First, make sure to soak the cashews so they are plump and soft. This will give that creamy, velvety texture to the dip.
  2. Make bacon bits by pan frying the bacon. Then, make caramelized onions by cooking raw onions in the rendered bacon fat. Cooking them in bacon fat imparts SO much flavor to this dish so don’t skip on this!
  3. Make the creamy base by blending cashews, mayonnaise, and the rest of the spices until smooth.
  4. In the last step, you’ll combine the blended cashews with bacon and caramelized onions. I love having yummy crunchy textures in this dish to go along with the dairy free cream base!

If you want to make this dip ahead of time, you can either heat it up in the oven or in the microwave. The dip does thicken a bit once chilled but it will still be good. If you want more of a cheesy texture, I recommend you heating it up.

  • 2 slices thick-cut sugar free bacon, chopped
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1/2 cup raw cashews, soaked in water for at least 1 hour
  • 1/2 cup paleo mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp nutritional yeast
  • 2 tbsp almond milk, or any non-dairy milk
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp crushed red pepper
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • 1/8 tsp cayenne (optional)
  • Chopped green onions, for garnish.

Instructions

  • Before cooking, make sure to soak the cashews for 1 hour to overnight.
  • Heat a skillet to medium heat. Cook chopped bacon until they are brown and crispy, about 10 minutes
  • Remove the bacon bits with a slotted spoon and set aside, leaving the bacon grease in the pan.
  • Add the onions into the pan and reduce the heat to medium-low. Cook for 20 minutes stirring occasionally until the onions are caramelized. Remove from heat.
  • Combine cashews, mayo, nutritional yeast, almond milk, apple cider vinegar, onion powder, crushed red pepper, salt, and cayenne in the food processor and blend until smooth and creamy.
  • Place in a bowl, then add bacon bits and caramelized onions and mix well.
  • Sprinkle with green onions, and serve with chips, crackers, and/or sliced vegetables.

Love this. Iโ€™ve made it several times and while I love the spice, I often swap in paprika to make it kid friendly. Measure with your heart.

This was sooooooo delicious! Made a double batch as written, although decreased amount of red pepper flakes by about 1/4. I was so happy to have a yummy dip at the family party I could eat and even all the dairy eaters raved about it! Served room temp and was perfect. Although eating leftovers straight from fridge and cold today was still really yummy! Oh, I did sub soy free vegannaise for mayo due to an egg sensitivity. But look forward to trying sometime with the paleo mayo too!

Very tasty! So easy to throw together and made the house smell sooo good! Cooked Bacon + Sautรฉed Onions = ๐Ÿ’—

  7. Heidi says:

Can this be done with something other than cashews? I am allergic to cashews, but not other nuts. This looks so good!!

    1. Jean Choi says:

I think you can try with pine nuts, sunflower seeds or even cooked cauliflower. I can’t guarantee results though. You may want to add a bit more fat with those options because cashews have a higher fat content. Let me know how it goes!

  8. Cheryl B. says:

You didn’t specify what to soak the cashews in.

    1. Jean Choi says:

      Water!

Dip sounds great but your attitude towards the game isn’t good. I understand about Patriots, it’s time for another team to be in the big game. But the eagles???? Cut them a break….Fly eagles fly!!!!!!! The Patriots era is over….Go Birds

    1. Jean Choi says:

Hi there, this post was written in 2016 and I believe the Broncos and the Panthers were in that game. Also, I grew up in NJ and NY so my loyalty lies in the Giants or the Jets. I don’t have any hard feelings towards other teams (maybe a bit towards the Patriots lol.. but who doesn’t?) but I don’t get crazy excited for the Super Bowl unless it’s one of those teams playing. Hope that clears up my sentiment. Hope you enjoy the dip!

Sounds great! What is the serving size for this recipe?

    Thanks!

    1. Jean Choi says:

I don’t like to specify servings sizes because we all eat different portions according to our body, our activity level, and if we are eating something as a snack or a meal. This recipe makes about 1 1/2 cup of dip so I can estimate about 6-8 servings. Hope you enjoy!

      1. Natalie LeShea says:

Thanks for the insight! Is this dip best served warm or cold?

        1. Jean Choi says:

I suggest warm or room temperature!
