reaching for a dark chocolate covered orange slices on a plate

I’ve tried dark chocolate dipped oranges a few times in my life, and I’ve always loved how they taste with the most amazing texture. When I looked into buying them pre-made, I couldn’t believe how pricy they were. I guess specialty items can be more expensive, but it became a great opportunity for me to attempt to make it myself at home. And honestly, it was a lot easier than I thought and SUPER tasty!

Chocolate Dipped Orange Slices Recipe

The process of making these treats is actually quite simple. You make dried orange slices in the oven by baking them at a low heat for a long time, and then each slice is dipped melted chocolate. I personally think the sweetness of the oranges complement dark chocolate perfectly, but you can use any kind of chocolate you prefer. I then sprinkled chocolate dipped oranges with sea salt, and the result is just perfection.

The chewy sweetened dried orange slices go wonderfully with the rich, crunchy chocolate, and it’s hard not to finish these in one sitting. They make a great, portable holiday gift as well!

Ingredients in Chocolate Dipped Dried Oranges

If you don’t count salt, there are only 4 simple ingredients in these chocolate covered dried orange slices. There’s no excuse not to make them!

  • Oranges: For a gorgeous array of color of oven dried orange slices, you can try using blood oranges too!
  • Coconut sugar: Or any granulated sugar.
  • Cinnamon
  • Chocolate chips: For extra rich and dark chocolate chips, I love these unsweetened dark chocolate chips. They are paleo and vegan too!
  • Flaky sea salt: I love this brand of flaky sea salt. Always tastes amazing and looks gorgeous on baked goods!

How to Make Dried Oranges Slices Dipped in Chocolate

It’s actually really easy to make your own dried orange slices in the oven!

  1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees F, and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Using a sharp knife or a mandolin, slice the oranges as thinly as possible. Place them on the baking sheet in a single layer.
  3. Stir together coconut sugar and cinnamon in a bowl.
  4. Sprinkle the tops of orange slices with the cinnamon sugar mixture, concentrating on the rinds.
  5. Bake for 2½-3 hours until the oranges slices are dried. Remove from the oven and cool completely.
  6. While the sweetened dried orange slices are cooling, melt the chocolate chips until smooth in a double boiler or microwave.
  7. Dip half of the orange slices into the melted chocolate, and place the slices back on the parchment paper to cool
  8. Once the chocolate has cooled for 7 minutes, sprinkle flaky sea salt on top, then cool until the chocolate is completely set.
  9. Store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the fridge.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do dried oranges taste like?

Dried oranges have a very concentrated orange citrus flavor. Because most of the moisture has been drawn out, the texture is chewy and delicious. These chocolate dipped orange slices are lightly sweetened with sugar, which brings out the flavor of the orange even more.

Can I make dried oranges in the dehydrator?

Yes, but it will take longer. Here’s how to make dried orange slices in a dehydrator: Set the temperature to 135 degrees F, and arrange the orange slices on the tray. Dehydrate for 5-7 hours, checking every 30 minutes after 3 hours.

How long will these last?

Since there’s no moisture left, these chocolate covered dried orange slices should last up to a year if properly dehydrated. However, if you are nervous that orange slices weren’t fully dried, you can keep them in an airtight container in the fridge and eat it within a month.
